Crystal Casting

In crystal throwing, also called crystal casting or lithomancy, each crystal carries its own symbolic and energetic meaning. When you cast the crystals, where and how they land, and which ones show up, are interpreted based on these meanings. This ancient practice combines intuition, symbolism, and the unique energies of each crystal to interpret messages from the universe or one's higher self.

In this practice, a person usually selects a handful of crystals, usually ones that are very different for the sake of variety. Then, the crystals are tossed or gently placed onto your designated area. Depending on where each crystal lands, how they interact with each other, and what areas they occupy on a chart or cloth are all considered significant. These positions are then interpreted based on the energies of the crystals and the intention of the reading. Some people also choose to use random charms in their divination and they either give them their own interpretations or go off of the "vibes" they give.

You can use crystals in crystal throwing by setting an intention, observing placements, using intuition, and creating a personal Key. By asking a question or focusing on a theme before casting your crystals you can get a better idea of what they are trying to tell you. It is recommended to use a tool such as a divination cloth or board because it can help guide your intuition and make it easier to make connections for beginners. They can sometimes be marked with symbols, elements, astrological signs, or house positions. You should also note where each crystal lands. Is it close to others? Is it in a certain quadrant of your casting cloth or board? It's also a good idea to establish a past, present, and future based on those quadrants. Remember to let the crystal’s meaning combine with your intuitive feeling about where it landed. You can also develop your own dictionary of meanings if certain stones resonate differently with you.

It is important to go into the reading with some idea of what you are looking to find because unlike with a tool like tarot there is less direct information being given to you. To explain this better, there are many resources that discuss the different tarot cards and their meanings, but because crystal throwing can use anything really, it makes it a lot more tailored to the individual who will have to rely more on their intuition. So ask those questions!

For those of you who are using crystals though, here are some good examples, if Rose Quartz, representing love and emotional healing, lands in a position labeled "past," it might indicate past emotional wounds affecting current situations. If Amethyst, an intuition and protection stone, lands in the "future" area, it might suggest upcoming spiritual clarity or new protection. Here are some other common stones and what they mean, Citrine means confidence, success, and abundance. When it appears, it means opportunities for growth, joy, or financial gain are in reach. Clear Quartz means clarity, amplification, and healing. When it appears, an energy is being magnified so you need to focus your thoughts and intentions clearly. Green Aventurine means luck, new beginnings, and emotional balance. It means a new opportunity is coming so we need to stay open to change. Carnelian means motivation, creativity, and courage. When it appears, it's time to take action and be bold in your pursuits. Black Tourmaline means protection, grounding, and energy shielding. When it appears, it's a sign that you’re being protected and it’s a good time to cleanse and stay grounded. Lapis Lazuli means truth, wisdom, and communication. When it appears, remember to speak your truth, or listen to what’s being said. Smoky Quartz means release, transformation, and grounding. When it appears, let go of old energy or emotional heaviness. Sunstone means joy, empowerment, and confidence. When it appears, remember to shine bright and let your authentic self lead the way. Labradorite means intuition, magic, and spiritual transformation. When it appears, it means a spiritual awakening or mystical insight is near. Hematite means grounding, clarity, and strength. When it appears, remember to stay grounded and focused, in this case, stability is key. Finally, Sodalite means insight, clarity, and balance. When it appears, you should trust your inner voice and think before acting.

Why should we use crystal throwing as a form of divination in the first place? A lot of people like using this method to receive spiritual guidance or clarity about a situation because of how much you can tailor it to your liking. Crystal throwing is a flexible and intuitive practice, meaning there's no single "right" way to do it. With experience, the practitioner often develops a deeper connection with both the crystals and the meanings behind their placements. When you use your crystals in this way, it also allows you to connect with the energies of the Earth and your crystals in a tangible way, allowing that bond to deepen.

Crystal throwing is a deeply personal and intuitive practice. As you build your experience, not only will this practice get easier for you, but the meanings of crystals may become even more layered and specific for you.
