Crystal Cleansing

Crystals are known as one the Earth's most natural and beautiful creations. They are capable of all sorts of wonders, both physical and spiritual. A good example of this would be how they can store and transfer energy. But, while they are powerful tools that many use in their practice, sometimes they need some help. This is because many crystals absorb the energy that they are surrounded by, including any negative energies. When this happens the crystal's power is dimmed from the negativity and muck so they need to be cleansed. Just like everything else, crystals operate through vibrating at certain frequencies, so it's important to get rid of those negative vibrations so they don't spread those instead. Now that we have an idea of how crystals operate we can make sure they’re working at 100%.

One of the best ways to cleanse crystals, especially if you have a lot that need tending to, is through singing bowls. While you are playing your singing bowl, you could also burn some incense, sage, or palo santo in the background. If you do not happen to have a singing bowl of your own, that is perfectly fine! All you have to do is go to an online platform such as YouTube and search for “singing bowl meditations” and choose one that calls to you.

You can also use Sage to smudge the crystal clean. To do this all you need to do is hold the burning sage underneath the crystal and let the smoke engulf it. While this is happening, visualize the negativity being expelled from the crystal.

Another way you can cleanse your crystals is by letting them bathe in sunlight or moonlight. It's important to recognize that for some crystals if they are left out in the sunlight for too long, it could cause their vibrant colors to dull. On the other hand, many people like leaving their crystals out under a full moon because it's the most powerful time of cycle and perfect for cleansing crystals.

With this next method it's good to be cautious and do research because depending on the crystal it could cause more harm than good. This is from using water to cleanse your crystals. This method would work best on tumbled stones rather than raw cluster formations and geodes. It is also a good idea to do personal research on whether or not the crystal can even handle water. This can best be explained by Selenite which can deteriorate if exposed to water.

Speaking of Selenite though, it is one of the few crystals that is considered to be self cleansing because its purpose is to remove negative energy, so it doesn't retain any. This is important because it can be used to cleanse many things. You can do this by putting your selected crystals in a bowl. So long as Selenite is somewhere in that mix, everything will be cleansed in a couple of hours!

During all of these methods it's a good idea to visualize the negativity being removed from the crystals and to set your intentions while the cleansing is happening. Once your crystals are cleansed it is recommended to keep them in areas that you are frequently in, so you and your crystals can share the good and positive energy.

There is one big question that’s left, how do you know your crystals need to be cleansed? The answer to this can change depending on what the crystals have been through. If you had just gotten done using the crystals in any rituals or ceremonies it's a good idea to cleanse them afterwards. This is especially true if they were used to help with shadow work, which often carries a heavy energy. If you would like to learn more about shadow work we have a detailed article about it here.

Another scenario that would warrant cleansing your crystals often, if not daily, would be if they are placed in a high energy environment where they can pick up on many different energies. This could be true for people who have crystals at their workplace. If this is the case for you, where you would be cleansing the crystals everyday, it's a good idea to use the Selenite method. This is because the Selenite is self cleansing, it still gets the job done but isn’t as tedious and is more subtle. Otherwise if the crystals aren’t being used at work or are not located in a wild environment, cleansing them every two weeks should suffice.
